"Raw Energy: YPA Mentoring 2011" Exhibition at the Hoxton Gallery
The Young Photographers' Alliance (YPA) arts charity is delighted to announce the launch of its first exhibition: “Raw Energy: YPA Mentoring 2011” at The Hoxton Gallery 20 March 2012.
The YPA Mentoring Programme links young, emerging photographers (aged 18-29) with established photographers and picture editors, teaching them how to work to a brief while honing their technical skills and their creative approach. The small teams of young photographers are assigned a brief (this year the theme is “energy”) and they are given two months to deliver their final projects. Our mentors meet regularly with their teams, offering support and guidance from the initial conceptual stage through to the final editing process.
For the 2011 programme, YPA ran two teams in London (a Fashion/ Portraiture team and a Reportage team) and team in Glasgow. The London Fashion/ Portraiture Team was mentored by picture editor Sharon O’Neill (former Deputy Picture Editor of The Sunday Times Style Magazine) and award-winning celebrity and fashion photographer, John Wright. The London Reportage team was mentored by Independent on Sunday Picture Editor, Sophie Batterbury and leading reportage photographer Justin Sutcliffe. Picture editor Elaine Livingstone (of Opus Media— formerly of Sunday Herald) and photographer Claire Stuart mentored the team in Glasgow.
This year's Mentoring Programme ran in conjunction with the charity's North American scheme. There were 15 teams in total across the US, Britain, and Asia.
The “Raw Energy: YPA Mentoring 2011” show will appear at the Hoxton Gallery in London from 20-22 of March. The show features an image from each of the nineteen UK mentees as well as few of the best images from the US programme.
